Looking at the 49ers offseason thus far

San Francisco’s offseason prior to trading three first-round picks to the Dolphins had been about the Niners keeping hold of their own, a goal that they largely achieved during an unquestionably impressive free agency period.

The most important bit of business the 49ers did was signing Trent Williams to a six-year deal to make him the highest-paid left tackle in football and ensuring that, regardless of whom they pick at quarterback, they will have the benefit of excellent protection on the left side.

Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley and K’Waun Williams were all brought back, along with strong safety Jaquiski Tartt, as the 49ers unexpectedly kept their secondary intact.

On the defensive line, D.J. Jones was retained on a one-year deal, but the 49ers lost their sack leader from last season as Kerry Hyder – who had 8.5 in 2020 – left for the Seattle Seahawks.

But, after adding Samson Ebukam as a rotational rusher who can provide insurance for the oft-injured Dee Ford and bolstering their interior rush by signing Maurice Hurst following his release from the Las Vegas Raiders, the 49ers can afford to have hope of Nick Bosa leading a reinvigorated pass rush in 2021.

Alex Mack’s arrival on the other side of the trenches gives the 49ers a dependable center with experience of the Shanahan scheme, an extremely valuable asset for an offense that may need to carry much more load if Ryans’ defense endures a drop-off.
