2021 NFL Draft: Late round QBs and their perfect fits
Shane Buechele lost his job to another guy on this list and went to SMU
Shane Buechele spent five years in college, three of which were at Texas. Once Sam Ehlinger took over, he was no longer needed and transferred to SMU. He did better there than he did at Texas. He was more productive and consistent than he was during his time in Orange and white. Shane may not have the upward trajectory as some of these later-round quarterbacks, but he has some good tools.
In 2019 he played in 13 games coming just shy of 4,000 passing yards coming in at 3,929 yards matching it with 34 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.
Buechele is not much of a runner and won’t wow many people with his 6-foot-1 207 pound frame. He does have natural instincts but doesn’t have fantastic throw power. Shane is more of a player you build up to be a backup than someone who I think will be a full-time starter. There is a chance in the right system he could be quite productive but would need to work on his mechanics a little bit for that to happen.
It’s hard to really lose getting Shane late when you look at the talent left on the rest of the board.
I think he could come in and spot start if needed, though I would not expect much and it would need to be a small playbook. But, at this point in the draft, it’s about what you usually expect from a quarterback. If a coach can get the most out of Shane he could be a really good west coast type quarterback, where he won’t have to throw far or hold the ball for too long.
