Tim Tebow recently signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here’s how he can assist Trevor Lawrence during his rookie season.
He’s back. After a nine-year hiatus from the National Football League, the legendary Tim Tebow has returned – singing a one-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Tebow has tried pretty much everything but football over nearly the past decade, and I don’t think that many would have predicted he would be on an NFL roster in the year 2021.
Still, this doesn’t come as a total surprise, as head coach Urban Meyer is probably the biggest Tebow supporter there is. After carrying Florida to a National Championship title back in 2008, Meyer has had an extreme amount of trust and respect for his most prized pupil.
Meyer is the newest head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars – the team coming off the worst record in the NFL in 2020. However, the legendary college coach is hoping to turn this ship around, and he won’t be without help. Because of their 1-15 record last season, Jacksonville was able to land Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lawrence was a former five-star recruit and one of the highest-graded quarterback prospects to ever come out of high school. He backed up his reputation with three dominant years of ACC football and led his squad to a National Championship win as a true freshman in 2018.
Jaguars new addition will help Lawrence
This brings us back to Tim Tebow. No, fans aren’t going to be chanting his name anytime soon to step in at quarterback. That ship has long since sailed. According to the report, Tebow is being signed with the intent to be a backup tight end.
Perhaps this is more of a ‘thank you’ gift from Meyer to Tebow for all the success he has brought him, but there are several reasons why having Tebow could help Lawrence as a rookie.
For starters, Tim Tebow is known for his strong leadership qualities. As a former first-round pick himself, Tebow could essentially act as quarterback coach to the young Trevor Lawrence. Though the rookie is already worlds ahead of where Tebow was as a passer, Tebow’s mentorship could go a long way.
In addition, there’s a chance that Tebow could actually help Lawrence on offense. Who would have ever thought we would be saying this. After Jacksonville already took some steps to add offensive talent around Lawrence this year with players like RB Travis Etienne and OT Walker Little, they brought in a veteran player who can wear multiple hats in Tebow.
Though Jacksonville recently spent a fifth-round pick on Ohio State tight end Luke Farrell, they could still use more help at the position. Tyler Eifert was the team’s number one tight end in 2020, but he is currently a free agent. He and James O’Shaughnessey combined for just 611 yards at the tight end position last year.
Tim Tebow might not offer much on the football field at this point in his career. After all, he turns 34 before the start of the season. However, his ability to mentor young players might be worth keeping him around. It will be interesting to see how he can assist Trevor Lawrence in 2021.
