It could be a tight race for the ultimate individual award in college football. Here’s why Spencer Rattler narrowly leads the pack in Heisman odds.

As there typically is, the 2021 season could prove to a tight race for the Heisman Trophy. Last year, a wide receiver took home the award for the first time since Desmond Howard all the way back in 1991, as Alabama’s DeVonta Smith had a remarkable year. Prior to that, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow came out of nowhere with the best statistical season we have ever seen in college football.

The race for the Heisman is always full of surprises, and this year, there doesn’t seem to be a clear and obvious frontrunner. History tells us that this award is very likely to go to a quarterback, but that’s not guaranteed to be the case in 2021.

As of now, Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler narrowly leads the pack in Heisman odds at +650 for the upcoming season, courtesy of WynnBET. However, this is a very close race. Just behind him is promising sophomore quarterback D.J. Uiagalelie of Clemson (+700) and Ohio State quarterback Bryce Young (+850).

Other top candidates include C.J. Stroud, J.T. Daniels, and Sam Howell. Many of these names are not draft-eligible in 2022, but Rattler and Howell could be fighting to be the top quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Why Heisman odds favor Spencer Rattler

It may not surprise you to learn that Spencer Rattler currently leads all players in Heisman odds next season. There are a few reasons for this. For starters, Rattler was the top quarterback recruit in the nation coming out of high school, and he has already established a terrific reputation.

Though Rattler isn’t necessarily the biggest or most athletically gifted quarterback, he never seems to be phased by anything and he is a mastermind when it comes to buying time and extending the play -something Patrick Mahomes has made a living doing at the NFL level.

Most importantly, Lincoln Riley has helped produce some very impressive statistical seasons at the quarterback position, and each of his past three quarterbacks has posted numbers that have been off the charts.

In 2017, Baker Mayfield brought home the Heisman Trophy with 43 passing touchdowns and 6 interceptions to go with an eye-popping 11.5 yards per attempt. Just a year later Kyler Murray won the Heisman. Murray’s numbers were pretty much on par with what Mayfield did in the season prior. Even Jalen Hurts was a Heisman candidate in 2019.
