Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence currently lead the NFL in rookie jersey sales
By Tommy Jaggi
The NFLPA released their list of the top 50 jersey sales in the NFL for the last quarter. Here’s where Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence land on the list.
The Jersey sale numbers are in from Q2 of 2021, and it’s no surprise to see that Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes lead the list of sales. Quarterbacks sell in the NFL, and despite the fact that Brady turns 44 years old in August, his jersey will last throughout the ages.
While NFL stars routinely soak up the most jersey sales around the football world, a few rookies occasionally find themselves in on that action. Recently, the NFLPA released a list of their top jersey sales from the second quarter of the 2021 calendar year. Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence find their names inside the top 10 of the NFL.
According to the list, Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields had the 6th-highest jersey sales in football this past quarter, while Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Trevor Lawrence ranked 8th in jersey sales.
This is quite high for two players who have yet to take an NFL snap, but you can’t blame their fans for being optimistic. For the first time in years, the Bears and Jaguars believe they have each found their next franchise quarterbacks.
Fields and Lawrence jersey sales fell just behind Brady and Mahomes as well as Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, and CeeDee Lamb. However, both rookies outpaced NFL superstars like Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson in Q2.
After Fields and Lawrence, there was a big gap between the next highest rookie on the list. That player happened to be Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Najee Harris. The former Alabama star ranked 24th in jersey sales for Q2. Though we are still at the beginning of training camp, Harris has quickly become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh (as the team finished dead last in the NFL in rushing in 2020).
San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance lands just two spots after him with the 26th-highest jersey sales last quarter. Jets new quarterback Zach Wilson (42nd) was the only other rookie to crack the top 50.
Which NFL rookies will crack the list in Q3?
Because of the way things are trending, it’s unlikely that the rest of the pack can catch up to the astonishing sales that Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence will experience by the end of the Q3, but there are a few other rookies who could leapfrog veterans near the bottom of this list.
The Philadelphia Eagles have a dedicated following, and a player like DeVonta Smith could quickly find himself inside the top 50 jersey sales – especially with a strong start to the 2021 season. In addition, Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase or Dophins receiver Jaylen Waddle could each find themselves on the list soon. All three of these receivers were taken inside the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft.
However, I’m most surprised to see that the Patriots first-round quarterback and former Alabama star, Mac Jones, hasn’t cracked the list yet. That will likely come in due time.
Fans have plenty of reason to be excited for these rookies as they look to be the future of their franchises. It will be interesting to see if any of these players could rival Justin Fields or Trevor Lawrence in rookie sales by the end of the season.
