A fresh start at safety?

The Jets are actually pretty set at safety for this season, with Marcus Maye and Ashtyn Davis expected to take the starting roles. However, that may not last.

Maye is playing on the franchise tag, and he is a bit old for someone who will be on their second contract, as he is already 28. Despite how good he is, it seems as if the Jets do not intend on paying him.

This draft is not as deep at safety, but there’s one massive name that comes to mind. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton is a physical specimen, as he is currently 6’4, 219 lbs. Hamilton’s unique size and speed allow him to be a versatile weapon that could replace Maye at free safety while also playing closer to the line on some snaps.

Of course, there are more names. Alabama’s Jordan Battle is expected to rise in this draft, but he does not truly have a position yet. He played all over the field and did well, so if he succeeds and develops, he could be a versatile weapon and the Jets future at safety. Northwestern’s Brandon Joseph also comes to mind, as he is a great pure free safety that could immediately fill in for Maye. He is not as versatile as the other prospects mentioned, but he does fill Maye’s role.

The Jets may not need a safety. They could resign Maye. Until they do, though, keep these names in mind.
