3 teams that must avoid QB Sam Howell in the 2022 NFL Draft
By Adam Burruss
Sam Howell is a top quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he does not fit every team. Which teams should pass on the signal-caller?
This quarterback group projects as one of the worst in a while, as none of the signal callers stand out as a true blue-chip prospect. However, the position remains scarce, and desperate teams always convince themselves to take risks on talent and see if they can develop one of these players.
With that in mind, the University of North Carolina’s Sam Howell projects as a top prospect with intriguing upside. At this point, many project him as a top-64 pick. Sam Howell’s skill set does not fit everyone, though. Which teams should be wary of the signal-caller?
Browns should avoid Sam Howell in 2022 NFL Draft
The Cleveland Browns recently suffered one of its more disappointing seasons as quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled and the team fell short of their playoff aspirations. With these quarterback troubles apparent, Howell seems comparable to Mayfield. Both are short, stocky quarterbacks who came into the league with plenty of arm talent.
However, Howell’s similarities with Mayfield end at that point. Cleveland’s offense, which consists of a wide-zone running game to supplement a play-action game, relies on timing and quickness that does not fit Howell. Howell could do well in Cleveland. Their stellar offensive line certainly helps any rookie quarterback gain comfort in the NFL. However, Howell’s strengths do not fit Cleveland’s.
As mentioned previously, Cleveland’s offense requires quick processing and shorter timing-based throws as they set up their deeper throws. Howell seems to be more of a vertical quarterback; he thrives on the deep shot. Cleveland’s offense can generate those opportunities, but their general game does not fit Howell as a passer. If they want a quarterback, Howell may struggle to consistently move the ball.
Howell may not be the worst successor to Mayfield theoretically, but he presents some of the same issues that Mayfield did this past season. If there are better players on the board, Cleveland should not force this selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
