Steelers should avoid Sam Howell in 2022 NFL Draft

Many project Howell to Pittsburgh, and on the surface, that fit makes sense. Pittsburgh needs a quarterback, they contain an incredible amount of talent in their skill positions, and Howell’s arm provides an opportunity for an actual deep passing game.

However, Pittsburgh’s offense heavily relied on short passes and yards after the catch. This scheme helped cover up Ben Roethlisberger’s deficiencies, but does it fit Howell?

The Steelers should only consider Howell if they want to make a massive change to their system in the post-Roethlisberger era. Howell does not project as someone who thrives throwing 3-yard out routes to Diontae Johnson. Howell could mesh with players such as Chase Claypool, but the general offensive design looks to be a detriment to the quarterback’s skill set. Howell cannot be treated like last year’s Ben Roethlisberger.

Their offense contains the pieces to thrive with Howell’s tools, but their current setup does not work to his advantage. If their offensive coordinator Matt Canada cannot adjust his scheme, the Steelers should pass on Howell.
