Saints should avoid Sam Howell in 2022 NFL Draft

The New Orleans Saints, for the first time in over a decade, truly lacks a quarterback. After Jameis Winston’s ACL tear, the team shuffled through quarterbacks. If the team decides to look through the draft for their next quarterback, Sam Howell may be there for their first two selections. However, the Saints do not fit Howell.

The Saints have weapons such as running back Alvin Kamara or wide receiver Michael Thomas. However, they lack the wide receiver depth to support a vertical passing game where Howell could thrive.

New Orleans finds themselves in a similar position as the Steelers. They switched their system to a quick passing game that relies on yards after the catch and quick decisions to support an aging Drew Brees.

While Sean Payton remains one of the game’s better offensive minds, Howell presents a conundrum to the team. If they saw him as the future quarterback for the team, how would they go about preparing the team for him?

New Orleans lacks the wide receiver depth to run a scary deep passing game. They may look to improve there, but could they acquire those wide receivers and spend a top pick on Howell? If the Saints wish to keep the same style of offense, Howell does not seem to be the ideal fit. The organization should be wary of selecting Howell in the 2022 NFL Draft.
