Raiders free-agency prospects to fill holes before the NFL Draft
How should the Silver and Black attack Free Agency?
Filling up the defense should be the main priority, as they look once again to attack WR early on in the draft. With their current cap space, and some adjustments to contracts coming this number should jump up a little bit, giving them a decent amount of room to work with. As of now, the current FA class looks to be defense-heavy.
With the new staff, I don`t see the Raiders going after older free agents, more looking for bargain values and trying to keep the team young. Or going after players which came from their former teams, which is a common occurrence.
With plenty of holes to fill over-paying, a veteran over the age of 31/32-years-old doesn’t make sense for the team moving forward. With just a couple of additions on both sides of the ball, this team can make a major leap forward. This is all pending Carr doesn’t come back down to earth after a career year.
Possible FA targets:
Brandon Scherff, G
Allen Robinson, WR
Dante Fowler Jr, EDGE
Tyrann Mathieu, S
Cam Robinson, LT
Will Fuller, WR
Marcus Williams, S
Jamison Crowder, WR
Trenton Brown, OT
Larry Ogunjobi, DT
Can they get any of these?
If the Raiders can pick up 3-4 players off this list, it would be a massive boost to go along with what they can do inside the draft. Scherff and Robinson will come with the biggest tags, but they might be the biggest needs outside of corner.
It’s rare to find a team where they have three number one needs. But, it’s hard to argue that WR/CB/OT are not all equally their biggest needs.
If they fail to bring back Jackson and Jones, that more or less leaves Renfrow as the only WR on the roster who played last year and mattered. We already addressed the massive issue with sacks and struggles in the run game. The secondary which is young at safety is abysmal at the corner position after letting go of two corners during the season due to off-field issues.
The draft and free agency should give the Raider nation some excitement and without Gruden and Mayock fighting or just blatantly making wrong choices, this could send them over the next step to a continuous playoff team.
With the Raiders never-ending struggles over the last four years as a whole in the NFL draft, ownership and management may move to fixing through free agency. Rather than going into another draft with holes to fill, which creates an even deeper hole as they don`t pan out.
