With each passing year, the top free agents in the NFL will land top contracts that could reset the market. What can we expect in this free agency period?  Will there be certain players in this coming cycle who can reset the market?

Only time will tell, but I think there could be a few players who may end up resetting the market.

We could cheat a little bit and also consider players who are still under contract but have finished their third or fourth seasons.  Someone like Justin Jefferson, for example, could land a massive extension this offseason but is still obviously under contract with the Minnesota Vikings.

For now, let’s just focus on the pending free agents in the NFL.  Which of these players could reset the market for their respective positions?

Lamar Jackson, QB

The most obvious choice is Lamar Jackson who is still negotiating with the Baltimore Ravens.  If the two sides cannot come to an agreement, there is a scenario where the 2019 MVP gets traded.  It would be wild to see Jackson get moved, but if the two sides were on the same page with a potential deal, it would have gotten done already.

Jackson is already the best dual threat quarterback in the history of the NFL, but does come with a bit of injury concerns, and I think that’s the main reason why the Ravens might be reluctant to hand him an extension that could eclipse $50 million per season.
