Jalen Carter remains one of the most-talked prospects in the entire 2023 NFL Draft class. He has been ranked as the #1 overall prospect on big boards throughout national media and his tape reflects a high-impact defender capable of taking over a game. However, character concerns have come to light in recent months after he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing that stemmed from a car crash in January that killed two people. While he avoided jail time after a sentence that included 12 months’ probation, questions will remain regarding his maturity off the field.

His talent is undeniable and the Lions have a culture growing that should help him remove distractions and focus on developing as a player. Dan Campbell has proven to get the most effort out of his players and Carter will provide a valuable presence along an improving defensive line. With Aidan Hutchinson rushing from the edge, Carter’s ability as both a run defender and pass rusher from the interior will complement well.
