There’s been and will be some quarterback movement this offseason. Which quarterbacks are set to disappoint in the 2023 season?  Honestly, I think one of the worst things for any professional sports teams to endure is poor quarterback play.

If you don’t have a quarterback, you don’t have competitive team; that’s just how it goes.  We’ll see the same thing as we always see year after year in the NFL:

A few quarterbacks breaking out, hitting their stride, some who may breakout and surprise some, the normal, elite signal callers, and some who end up disappointing.

Well, with the projected starting QBs across the league for 2023, which ones are set to disappoint in 2023?

Quarterbacks that are set to disappoint in the 2023 season

Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo is not a good quarterback, people.  He was exceptionally propped up by an elite defense, running game, and offensive line in years as a 49er playing in Kyle Shanahan’s system.  Coming over to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency will put a dagger in Garoppolo’s starting career.

The Raiders have a terrible defense and poor offensive line.  I just don’t think Jimmy G is going to be nearly as efficient as he was in San Fran, and I’d expect that he disappoints in 2023.

Mac Jones

I don’t think Mac Jones is a franchise quarterback and I think his ceiling is quite low.  I view him as someone in the mold of a lesser version of Kirk Cousins, and I’m not sure even with the insertion of Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator, Jones will play at more than a replacement level.  Being that Jones’ name apparently was being shopped by the Patriots this offseason, I think we’re in for a disappointing season from the third year QB.

Geno Smith

I think Geno Smith isn’t going to play nearly as well as he did in 2022.  I do believe there are pieces of evidence to suggest that Smith can fizzle out.  I’ve found a few instances of backup caliber quarterbacks getting a chance to start, playing well, but never returning to that form.

Case Keenum did it.  Josh Freeman did it.  Matt Cassel did it.  Derek Anderson did it.  Matt Moore did it.

I just don’t think history bodes well for Smith here.  He did enjoy one of the most efficient season of all starting QBs in 2022, so maybe even if he regresses, he’ll still be efficient, but again, I don’t like his chances.

Kenny Pickett

I don’t think Kenny Pickett will play particularly well in 2023.  The Steelers’ offensive line is a bit below average, and their weapons are adequate, but nothing special.  Najee Harris doesn’t appear to be much of a difference maker at running back and I’m not sure offensive coordinator Matt Canada is very good at his job.

To me, Pickett also doesn’t do much of anything that well.  Sure, he can be a good quarterback in the league, but what makes him special?  I don’t think Kenny Pickett takes that year two leap that many other quarterbacks in the NFL have before.
