The 2022 NFL Coach of the Year went to Brian Daboll of the New York Giants. Which coach will win the award in the 2023 season?  I really like the Coach of the Year award because it feels like it’s got the most parity and variance of any award in football.

Brian Daboll won the award last year as he led his Giants’ team to a 9-7-1 record and a shocking playoff berth.  Just take a look at all the past winners of the award.  There are rarely ever repeat award winners.

I think that trend will continue in the 2023 season.  I don’t think Daboll will win the award again as I think these three men should be considered favorites for the prestigious award.

Favorites to win the 2023 NFL Coach of the Year award?

Sean Payton

Sean Payton was traded from the New Orleans Saints to the Denver Broncos and is inheriting what is a very good roster that was decimated by injuries in 2022.  They were also a horribly coached unit as well.

Payton won this award in 2006 and is one of the best offensive coaches in this generation.  We’ve seen coaches in the CotY award in their first year with a new team, so I don’t think Payton winning would be that outrageous to suggest.

Doug Pederson

Honestly, Doug Pederson should have won this award last year.  What he did with that Jaguars’ team was nothing short of a miracle, especially considering how they started the season.  Trevor Lawrence is going to be an MVP candidate this season and I think the Jaguars go 6-0 in their division and win double digit games, likely earning a top three seed in the AFC.

Pederson is going to put together one heck of a team this year, and I think we need to start putting the Jaguars near the very top of the NFL’s best.

Robert Saleh

Robert Saleh is likely going to catch some attention this year since Aaron Rodgers is now his quarterback.  I don’t necessarily agree with the idea of Saleh winning if the Jets were to go 11-5 and make the playoffs, but that’s how this usually works.

The Jets have a top five defense and could have an elite offensive output with Rodgers under center.  Honestly, the Jets probably gets the boot if they don’t make the postseason this year, but I think he’s got an inside track to the Coach of the Year award.

Who has a better roster than the Jets?

Honorable Mentions: Kyle Shanahan, Zac Taylor, Andy Reid
