2023 NFL Season: Three records that could be broken
With the expanded 17-game season now in its third year, could this be the year that we finally see some all-time single-season records broken? Records are indeed meant to be broken. However, some may not feel the same way if there are single-season records broken since the NFL has moved to a 17-game regular season.
If a single-season record is broken, I do think it’s impressive nonetheless. The NFL is turning into a heavy passing league that also heavily prioritizes getting after the QB. I think for that reason, there are a few records that could end up falling in 2023.
2023 NFL Season: Three records that could be broken
A pass rusher could break the single-season sack record
Michael Strahan and TJ Watt own the record for the most sacks in a season in NFL history. The number is 22.5, and Watt did that in just 15 games. Strahan did his in a 16-game season. Nick Bosa led the NFL with 18.5 sacks in 2022 and I think this is an attainable feat to pass.
Matt Judon, of all players, was actually on pace to break the single-season sack record for a time in 2022. The league is also filled with a plethora of elite pass rushers, so keep an eye on this record.
Could someone break Calvin Johnson’s receiving record?
The NFL is a pass first league. Calvin Johnson owns the record for the most receiving yards in a season with 1,964. Cooper Kupp gave this record a run for his money in 2021 with 1,947 yards. Justin Jefferson led the NFL in 2022 with a hair over 1,800 yards.
Justin Jefferson and Cooper Kupp would be my two picks to be able to break this record. Tyreek Hill could also be a viable candidate. Both Jefferson and Hill got themselves inside the top-11 all-time in terms of receiving yards in a season in 2022, believe it or not.
Peyton Manning’s passing yard record is vulnerable
Peyton Manning’s 2013 season still stands as the best regular season by a QB in the history of the NFL, but it’s one that could get a crack in it at some point. Manning’s record stands at 5,477 yards.
Patrick Mahomes’ 2022 season saw him pass for 5,250 yards, which was the fourth highest total in NFL history. Tom Brady also had 5,316 yards in 2021, which was the third highest total in NFL history.
At some point, this has to be broken, right? The AFC trio of QBs that I think can beat it are Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert. Maybe 2023 is the year that this decade old record get shattered once and for all.
