2023 NFL Season: Three head coaches on the hot seat

Ron Rivera, Washington Commanders

This is it for Ron Rivera, and I honestly think this might be his last shot at being a head coach in the NFL.  The 61 year old Rivera has been a head coach in the NFL every year since 2011, and the 2023 NFL season could be his last for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, he’s not yet finished with a winning record in any year with the Washington Commanders, and has not had a winning record as a HC in the NFL since 2017 when he was with the Carolina Panthers.

Also, the team did bring in Eric Bieniemy onto the staff this offseason, and it seems like entire NFL landscape has been clamoring for EB to land a HC gig.  Well, if the Commanders start the season shaky, they have a perfect avenue to fire Rivera, as they can simply promote Bieniemy to HC and give him a fair shot.

They have a very good roster in my opinion, but the big question is at QB.  Can Sam Howell take a leap in year two?  Can the 2022 fifth round pick defy the odds as a late round QB selection?  I’m not so sure.  The Commanders do have a nice trio of pass catchers and I think a fine offensive line.

The NFC East is a very tough division, so that might not play in their favor, but with the NFC as a whole being a weak conference, they should have a shot at a Wild Card spot if things go the right way.

Other head coaches on the hot seat: Brandon Staley, Josh McDaniels, Kevin Stefanski, Matt Eberflus,
