NFL teams are using the spread and-or some version of the West Coast offense, where short passing is highlighted. Therefore, big, strong receivers are in demand to take short passes (long handoffs), break tackles running after the catch. And in the vertical game, these big receivers can make the catch for a chunk of yardage or a score over the smaller defensive backs.

So NFL G.M.s are now looking for receivers like Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones and A.J. Green in the draft. So University of Alabama’s Amari Cooper is universally expected to be the first receiver taken in next May’s draft. West Virginia’s Kevin White and Arizona’s Jaelen Strong’s size have them among the glamour boys at the position also.

Meanwhile, Phillip Dorsett is projected to go in the fourth round at the highest and not at all on some draft boards. With the new NFL rules, you really can’t touch receivers so the smaller, extremely fast receiver has a place in today’s game. Little speedsters Desean Jackson of the Washington Redskins, T.Y. Hilton of the Indianapolis Colts and Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently ripping the NFL up.

Yet University of Miami receiver Phillip Dorsett is projected to go in the fourth round and not on every draft board at that. The little guys get overlooked these days as Hilton and Brown were taken in the third and sixth rounds respectively as Jackson went in the second. Dorsett is going to take the NFL by storm so the G.M. that’s smart enough to make the pick will get good value.
