Houston’s Steven Taylor is a versatile linebacker prospect who contributes on all phases of the game.

Steven Taylor is a unique prospect in that he doesn’t fit the mold of a traditional linebacker. Houston is very creative in the way they use him and move him all over the field. Taylor can be found rushing the quarterback, dropping in coverage and on the edge to support the run.

His versatility is the key to his draft stock as he lacks the elite athleticism evaluators covet. Taylor isn’t overly explosive nor is he a fluid athlete. He lacks that short-area burst needed to close on the ball carrier and will often be found arriving a step or two late.

However, he plays with excellent awareness which is why he’s successful as a blitzer. His ability to time to the snap helps him overcome his lack of quickness. Taylor also does a good job dropping his shoulder and shooting by the blocker.

It’s important to note that Taylor isn’t a 3-4 linebacker who will generate pressure with his speed. He’s more of a moving chess piece capable of putting himself in proper position.

Taylor has flashed the ability to set the edge against the run. He uses leverage to hold at the point of attack and protect the edge. However, his lack of size will make it tough to hold up against the bigger and more power NFL offensive linemen.

The issue is that Taylor’s lack of athleticism limits his upside. He’s someone who’ll need to earn a role as a special teams ace and situation pass rusher. There’s a place for a hard-worker like Taylor in the NFL, but it’s unlikely he’ll be a high draft choice.
