Ohio’s Tarell Basham is an explosive pass rusher who has the potential to quickly develop into a disruptive force in the NFL.

Tarell Basham is a quick-twitch athlete who gets off the line of scrimmage in a hurry. He combines his quick first step with excellent snap awareness. Basham is routinely the first player out of his stance which gives him an edge.

His quickness is his best attribute, but Basham also features good overall fluidity. This allows him to easily change direction and employ an inside counter. Basham also features quick hands that keep blockers off his frame.

He is a balanced athlete who keeps a low pad level and maintains leverage. Basham features an effective spin move thanks to this balance. His effort is also something that really makes him a dangerous pass rusher.

The one area where Basham needs work is as a run defender. There are times where he fails to recognize the play location. He is also a bit undersized to consistently work at the line of scrimmage as a defensive end.

However, Basham could improve his run defense by improving his strength and overall feel. His effort and tenacity speak to the fact that he’ll work at his craft.

Ohio realized that Basham’s value was as a pass rusher, but there were a few occasions where they asked him to drop in coverage. Basham’s balance and overall athleticism gives him a chance to add this to his game.

Overall, Basham has the tools to be a highly effective NFL pass rusher. His quick first step, balance and effort give him the ability to make an immediate impact. The question is whether or not he has the size or strength to play defensive line. It’s possible he’s looking at a transition to outside linebacker.
