The Dallas Cowboys are drawing the allure of young prospects

After a dominant sophomore season with the Penn State Nittany Lions, linebacker Micah Parsons opted out of the 2020 season in order to train for the 2021 NFL Draft. He is the top linebacker on most draft pundit’s boards, displaying the ability to dominate at every element at the position.

Parsons fills his responsibilities in the run game, he is no slouch in coverage, and can provide the juice off the edge as a pass rusher as well. On the year in 2019, Parsons racked up 52 solo tackles, a massive 14 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, five sacks, five passes defended, and four forced fumbles for the Nittany Lions.

Now it turns out that Parsons has a preference as to where he would like to land this upcoming April as well as he wants to head to the Dallas Cowboys:

Parsons not the first prospect to vie for Dallas Cowboys

This is not the first time a prospect has asked for the Cowboys to select them in the NFL Draft. Remembering back to the 2017 NFL Draft, first overall pick Myles Garrett posted a video asking for the Cowboys to trade up to the first overall pick and with the Cleveland Browns and select him.

While the Cowboys did not, in fact, trade up to take Garrett and the rest is history as he has signed a massive extension with the Browns, the allure is still there to play in Dallas. Currently sitting with the fourth overall pick in the draft, the Cowboys will have the potential to land Parsons as quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields are set to take over the first two picks.

This leaves just the Cincinnati Bengals, who desperately need offensive line help, between the Cowboys and Parsons. The question remains: will the Cowboys be interested in adding Parsons to their roster or will they opt for a prospect like Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II instead?

Does the need fit for Parsons?

The Cowboys find themselves in need of a linebacker.

While they have Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch on the roster, neither have exactly been good this season between the stripes. Smith has looked shot as he struggles to change directions, and his eyes have been leading him in the wrong decision. Vander Esch has been better, but not by much for the Cowboys this season.

The problem, however, is the amount of money they have attached at the position. Smith is under contract through 2025, and the Cowboys do not have an out in his deal until after next season. Even then, the Cowboys would have to cover over $6 million in dead money to move on from him.

The Cowboys could, however, opt not to pick up Vander Esch’s fifth-year option, but this is a decision the team has to make this offseason. Long story short, the need is not necessarily there to draft another linebacker in the top-five, but it has not stopped Jerry Jones from getting the guy he wants in the past.
