The Doctor’s Top 10 Heisman or Bust Watch September 20, 2011 — Week 3
By Editorial Staff
Stanford’s QB Andrew Luck had a solid game but nothing spectacular (325 yards and 2 TD passes) against a not so good Arizona team.
Michigan’s QB Denard Robinson had a very good game rushing (198 yards) and a not so good game passing against Eastern Michigan
Baylor’s QB Robert Griffin III had a fantastic game, albeit against Stephen F. Austin, Griffin threw for 265 yards and 3 TDs on 20 of 22 passing and also added another 78 yards rushing on 9 carries.
South Carolina’s RB Marcus Lattimore finally put up some huge numbers rushing for 246 yards on 37 carries and scoring 3 TDs.
Oregon’s RB LaMichael James looked even better in week 3 than he did in week 2 but he played against Missouri State, not known in many circles as a football power. He did have some gaudy numbers in rushing for 204 yards on just 12 carries and scoring 3 TDs.
Moving up on the Heisman Watch list is Wisconsin’s new QB Russell Wilson, three games and three excellent performances. He is currently second in NCAA FBS passer rating at 213.4. Baylor’s Robert Griffin is first with a passer rating of 244.5. Wilson only needs 9 more games like the first three and he should be at the New York Athletic Club come the time to announce this year’s Heisman winner.
Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez continues to win at Nebraska in spite of marginal passing statistics but not so bad rushing stats for a quarterback.
Clemson Quarterback Tajh Boyd and Notre Dame Wide Receiver Michael Floyd have jumped into early consideration for this year’s Heisman Watch. Remember, they are only being added to the current Heisman Watch and at best are maybe numbers 9 and 10 in the Doctor’s current ranking of Heisman hopefuls.
QB Tajh Boyd has led Clemson to 3 straight wins and put up some really good number. The best of which came against Auburn where he threw for almost 400 yards, completed over 70% of his passes and shredded the Auburn pass defense for 4 TDs. Looking at Notre Dame’s Wide Receiver Michael Floyd we see some pretty impressive numbers for a Notre Dame receiver, 31 receptions for just under 400 yards with a couple of TD receptions. By year’s end he could become the first Notre Dame receiver ever to accumulate 100 or more receptions in a season.
In a quiet sort of way the Wisconsin Badgers’ two main running backs are starting to pile up a few offensive stats that may actually be fairly impressive by the end of the year and might just be good enough for serious Heisman consideration.
This week’s new Doctor’s 2 to watch are wide receiver Marquess Wilson from Washington State with 15 receptions for 429 yards 4 TDs and 28.6 yards per catch and running back Ronnie Hillman from San Diego State with 77 carries for 497 yards 8 TDs and 6.5 yards per carry.
