Iowa OT Brandon Scherff practices day after surgery, plays Saturday
By Peter Smith
Iowa left tackle Brandon Scherff was expected to miss 2-3 weeks when it was discovered he had meniscus surgery this past week. There was no ligament damage so it was not as serious as it could have been, but Scherff got out there and was on the practice field the very next day. Scherff played this past Saturday in Iowa’s rivalry against Iowa State and while there may have been a play or few where the knee might have caused him an issue, including giving up a sack to the Cyclones, but on balance, he played well.

Unfortunately, while Scherff was able to get out there and help the Hawkeyes, they ultimately fell short and the Cyclones won the game 20-17 after a 17-3 second half. For Scherff, while the goal was to help contribute to a victory for his team, NFL teams will undoubtedly take notice of his toughness and ability to play through pain. Scherff is one of the more notable prospects for the 2015 NFL Draft for the offensive line and this should only help him.
It is ultimately yet to be determined if Scherff’s best position for the NFL is going to be at tackle or guard, but this week suggests that Scherff should be able to earn the respect and admiration of teammates quickly at the next level because of his toughness. Especially in college, when players are not getting paid, it would be easy and perhaps smarter to sit and let the injury fully heal, but Scherff showed that he is a player that will do everything he can to help his team win, whether it be at Iowa or for the next level.
