Texas A&M running back Trey Williams has announced he will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft. In a crowded A&M backfield, Williams was a runner that could win in space but was not afraid to attack between the tackles. The 5’8″ 195lb runner will attempt to catch on with a team that can use him as a returner or as a specialist both as a runner and receiver, potentially out of the backfield and in the slot. The running back class is loaded this year and the underclassman impact will be enormous, so Williams has to hope that he is different enough in what he brings to the table for him to catch on with an NFL team.

The decision for Williams to declare may seem somewhat peculiar, but he may be considering a few different factors in the decision. While he carries a good amount of weight for his size, typically smaller running backs have fewer carries in their career and he may want to save as many touches as he can for when he is eligible to get paid for them.
The other factor may be the crowded backfield in College Station. Williams may see the writing on the wall that the touches simply will not be there for him next season and he may be getting out now to avoid getting buried on the depth chart. This season, Williams carried the ball 81 times for 560 yards and 7 touchdowns while catching 16 passes for another 105 yards and a touchdown. Williams also has experience as a kickoff returner. He may have a difficult time getting drafted in the NFL and could have to try to make it as an undrafted free agent.
