What I See

I like the same things the scouting world likes about Winston but I want to take them further. That toughness makes him willing to hold the ball a little longer for the receiver to break open, knowing he’s going to get crushed when he throws. I also like his ability to slide in the pocket and if he gets flushed out, he always has his eyes down the field, looking for a target.

He usually knows where his protection is and where the free blitzer is coming from so he can throw the ball quickly too. Then there’s the way he breaks tackles to make throws or make throws with defenders hanging on him. If Mariota and his 4.4 speed wasn’t coming out this year, everyone would be talking about how athletic Winston as I he once hurdled a guy then put a move on a defender as soon as he landed.

His teammates’ believe that their never out of a game and watching Winston put his arm around one that made a costly fumble tells you just what kind of leader he is. The off-the-field stuff is disturbing but this was a teenager that learned from his mistakes as there hasn’t been anything of late. What I don’t agree with how the some of the scouting world don’t like what they call an elongated delivery. He’s no Dan Marino but he does’t wind up like Randall Cunningham or Byron Leftwich either—his release is average.
