Running Game: Walford

The blocking edge goes to Walford, who was an in-line blocker for star running back Duke Johnson. Johnson ran for over 1,600 yards in 2014 and a good portion of it come from running outside. To get outside, you need your tight end to get a seal and Johnson depended on Walford for that.

NFL.com scout Lance Zlerlien said of his blocking, ” Becoming a very reliable blocker. Is tough enough and physical enough to be a play-side blocking tight end on zone runs. Bends and explodes from hips into his targets and sustains with a good base. Will drive smaller linebackers off the line of scrimmage in run game. Has lined up in-line, slot and as an H-back.

Zlerlein’s scouting report of William’s blocking wasn’t so good, consisting of, “Primarily used as move tight end. Body is a little soft and could use additional weight work to handle NFL hits. Won’t generate push as an in-line blocker and has limited feel and instincts as a move blocker.”
