Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden wants a bigger, stronger, meaner, more physical offensive line. He’s been trying to overhaul the smaller, zone-blocking offensive line he inherited when he got the job. So with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Redskins selected Brandon Scherff.

They have been very pleased with the pick since way before he ever set foot on the Redskins’ complex. Defensive lineman Jason Hatcher told Redskins.com, “Hell of a pick. I watched him on film, he’s a very aggressive and violent person. If he gets you in a vulnerable situation, he’s going to finish you.

“He’s nasty, and that’s what you expect out of your right tackle. I like him. He’s just a rookie, but just watching him, [he] really gained my respect. He loves to play the game of football and I’m excited to see what he’s going to do this year.”

Since he’s been with the Redskins in minicamps and OTAs, Scherff  has impressed his team even more. Gruden on the team’s Twitter feed that Scherf, “doesn’t need a chip” on his shoulder to play hard, because “he’s going to try his butt off on every play” and he’s already penciled in as the starting right tackle.
