Barring injury, the Houston Texans’ defensive front-seven is going to be bananas in 2015. All the defense needed before the draft was to tighten up the back end and they could shut fools down. So in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Texas took Kevin Johnson No. 16 overall.
Johnson was obviously impressive at Wake Forest in 2014 and it continued into the scouting process. At 6’0″ 188 pounds, he has pretty good size and running a 4.52 40, he has okay speed. But with an awesom 6.79 3-cone drill time and a freaky 41.5-inch vertical leap he became the Texans’ guy.
And from day one, minute one, he’s done nothing but validate the selection by the Texans. Darn-near every report on him from OTAs and minicamps on him this offseason have been good ones. And you can put some stock in that even without pads because he job is to cover receivers.
Head coach Bill O’Brien told HoustonTexans.com after his first offseason workout, “This is a guy that’s a very quick guy,” O’Brien said on a season ticket town hall conference call. “He’s a tall guy. He’s a guy that has really good transition ability. He’s got what I call really good recover transition. If he’s getting beat, he can stick his foot in the ground and really make up a lot of ground.”
Pat D Stat even tweeted on how well Johnson could break on the ball.
And with the pass-rush the Texans have, watch out Andrew Luck.
