Heading into the season, I had Mike Williams rated as the top wide receiver prospect eligible for the 2016 draft. He’s an extremely smooth athlete who is a nightmare for defensive backs to cover. Williams is so quick in and out of his breaks that he easily creates separation.
His length and willingness to attack the ball at its highest point increases his playmaking ability. It means that Williams is a threat to break off strong routes, take the top off the defense and out jump defensive backs in contested situations.
Williams’ decision to enter the 2016 draft is complicated because of the neck injury he suffered at the beginning of the season. He has and will miss the entire season which sets him a back a year in his development.
Scouts will have a limited amount tape to study if Williams decided to make the jump to the NFL. They would also have to consider any potential long-term effects from his injury. The reports are that he’s expected to make a full recovery, but teams will want to put him through intense medical exams.
It would make the most sense for Williams to return to Clemson and show he’s fully recovered. However, the lure of the NFL and chance to score a big paycheck will be in the back of his mind.
