Cameron Wake’s injury could impact the Miami Dolphins 2016 NFL Draft Plans

Cameron Wake has been one of the more dominant pass rushers over the past several season. Last night, he tore his Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the rest of the season. This injury is a devastating blow for the Miami Dolphins playoff hopes this season, but also likely impacts their approach to the 2016 NFL Draft.

Wake turns 34 years old in January and could be facing a decline in his physical talents. His age might also play a role in his recover from the torn Achilles. This is a serious injury that requires a lot of rehab and recovery time. There’s a possibility that when Wake returns to the lineup some of his trademark explosiveness is missing.

Having the ability to generate pressure on the quarterback is key to a defense’s success. Miami has been fortunate to have Wake but now they need to start thinking about the future. Even if he fully recovers from the injury the Dolphins would be wise to target a pass rusher early in the 2016 draft.

This year’s draft has several options that would be a good fit for Miami’s defense. Someone like Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett and Baylor’s Shawn Oakman are two players who could be available when the Dolphins are on the clock.

At this point, Miami is trending towards a middle of the 1st round pick as they appear unlikely to earn a playoff berth.

Garrett is an emerging player who features excellent length and explosiveness. He excels at timing the snap and beating the blocker to the edge. His commitment to using inside hands allows him to also deploy a power move and get a push on the pocket.

Oakman is a freakish athlete who has taken a positive step in his development each year. He’s still developing as a player but will get 1st round attention because of his measurables and upside.

The Dolphins have other needs but it’s important to be able to disrupt the timing of the offense and make the quarterback as uncomfortable as possible.
