For a little over half the season, the San Diego Chargers were explosive on offensive but couldn’t get stops on defense. They already have one of the best secondaries in the NFL but their young defensive front-7 held the defense back. However, that young defensive front-7 started to come together and play well down the stretch of the season.

Inside linebacker Denzel Perryman eventually became a starter and played well beside Manti Teo. Melvin Ingram, the team’s 2012 1st-round pick, showed up with 6.5 sacks in the last five games. But when as the defense came together, the offense started to fall apart, unable to put points on the board.

Injuries to the offensive line are the main reasons the Chargers offense didn’t keep things going. They also played a big part in when 2015 1st-round pick Melvin Gordon couldn’t get going. The offensive line will be back together in 2016 so expect Gordon and Rivers to move the offense.

So the Chargers touch up the defense here at No. 3 overall and take defensive end Deforest Buckner. He’s the Leonard Williams of the 2016 NFL Draft and will improve the Chargers against the pass and run. Expect Ingram to be even better going forward while Buckner takes the double and triple-teams.
. DE. Oregon. Deforest Buckner. 3. player. 13
