Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers 2016 Scouting Report

Kentrell Brothers is a well-built linebacker prospect who features a well rounded game. He does a good job supporting the run and playing around the line of scrimmage. Throughout his career, he showed the ability to be a reliable tackler and lead his defense.

Brothers quickly reads his keys and doesn’t hesitate to pursue the football. He approaches the ball carrier under control and balanced. This allows him to avoid missed tackles and keep the runner from picking up yards after contact.

He isn’t afraid to play physical in that he’ll take on blockers using hands to hold his ground. He delivers a strong enough jolt to keep blockers off his frame which helps him disengage.

Brothers needs to show more explosiveness when closing on the ball carrier. He doesn’t show that elite closing speed most top-end NFL linebackers possess. Without that burst, his ability to make quick reads becomes increasingly more important.

In pass coverage, Brothers shows good awareness while keeping his head on a swivel. He’s able to identify developing routes while in zone coverage. However, Brothers doesn’t have the overall quickness or athleticism to be really effective in a man-coverage defense.

He’ll need to work on his craft in order to avoid being labeled as a two-down linebacker. The more effective NFL linebackers are those who can stay on the field in obvious passing situations. These are the linebackers who are getting the bigger contracts while the traditional run stuffers are looking for work.
