Minnesota’s Mitch Leidner is an under-the-radar quarterback prospect who has a chance to quickly rise up draft boards.

Mitch Leidner has prototypical size and bulk for the quarterback position. He’s a good athlete than can do some damage with his legs. His arm strength is slightly above average and could improve with some changes to his throwing motion.

Minnesota runs a conservative offense that features a heavy run game with shots downfield sprinkled in throughout the game. This offense has gives Leidner plenty of opportunities to work from under center and make multiple reads.

When provided enough time in the pocket, Leidner shows the ability to process information and go through his progressions. He is committed to tying his eyes and feet as he looks for an open target.

A large majority of Leidner’s throws were into tight coverage because his receivers struggled to create a lot of separation. His ball placement was consistent as he did a good job throwing his targets open. Leidner’s overall accuracy would improve with changes to his mechanics.

His throwing motion is too long and lack proper following through. Leidner needs to work on planting his back foot, firing off and delivering the ball in one quick motion. He tends to fall off his throws which includes him opening up his shoulders.

Leidner’s lack of fluidity in his release really negatively impacts his deep ball. His passes down the field lack proper loft, depth and placement. These throws tend to arrive on a line and into the back of the defender.

The ability to handle pressure is also an area of concern. Too often, Leidner drops his eyes to the rusher and freezes in the pocket. Staring down the rush plays right into the hands of the defense because it keeps the quarterback from locating the open receiver.

Leidner has the physical traits to take his game to the next level.  However, he needs to show more big-play ability and consistency in order to get significant consideration by NFL evaluators. This starts with cleaning up his delivering and improving his deep ball.
