Clemson’s Carlos Watkins is a big-bodied defensive lineman who steps into the spotlight for the Tigers this year.
Carlos Watkins is now the leader of Clemson’s defensive line and will be asked to replace the production from draft picks Shaq Lawson, Kevin Dodd and DJ Reader. He has a tough task ahead, but has the talent to make a major impact.
Watkins is a physical defender who has the upper-body strength to control the line of scrimmage. He also features long arms that allows him to gain inside hands and keep blockers off his frame. His powerful hands help him quickly disengage.
He is a solid athlete for his size, but isn’t an overall explosive player. Watkins’ burst off the line is hindered by his tendency to quickly raise his pad level. He needs to do a better job keeping low, firing off the ball and delivering an initial jolt.

His slow get off also impacts his ability to both rush the passer and support the run. Watkins’ pass rush ability is limited to a push on the pocket. He just isn’t quick enough off the line to shoot the gap and consistently penetrate.
Against the run, Watkins struggles to cross the face of the blocker and will get sealed from the play. The technically sound offensive linemen who know how to use angles can seal him even if they can’t match his power.
A lot of these issues are tied to Watkins lack of leverage. He flashes high-end potential when he does stay low and fire off the ball. Watkins is a prospect because of his size, natural athleticism and raw power. He just needs to tighten up his technique and play with more consistency.
His position in the NFL will likely be at the nose tackle position in a 4-3 attack—unless he can improve as a penetrator.
