5. New York Jets: Davis Webb, QB California.

DeShaun Watson and Brad Kaaya’s fall means Davis Webb’s rise. Webb is a transfer from Kingsbury’s Texas Tech offense so he’s a gunslinger.

Webb will remind scouts and fans of Jared Goff. He’s tall, lanky and has a medium route pass arm. Like Goff, he doesn’t have the cannon to be a deep ball thrower.

Webb has a good combination of mobility and height. However, in that offense at Cal it’s a fair question if playing in the shotgun all the time prepares him for the NFL.

Whether or not Goff actually plays in 2016 is largely irrelevant to Webb’s draft value. That said, if Goff comes onto the field and struggles badly, it will prevent a Webb rise.

So the million dollar question: why Webb over Kaaya or Watson? Simply put, Kaaya and Watson aren’t doing much to improve in the eyes of the scouts. Watso especially is getting labeled as a running quarterback who can’t hit the NFL throws.

Kaaya still struggles with pressure and now the scouts appear to be noticing it. He’s regularly struggling when he’s rushed up the middle. If this author can see it, then scouts can as well.

Webb deals with pressure much better than Kaaya or Goff. But he’s no Kizer. He doesn’t panic and has pre-set plans when blitzed from certain angles.

And the Jets desperately need an upgrade at quarterback. Hackenberg is years away from being pro ready. Geno Smith has had multiple major knee injuries. And Fitzpatrick is still Ryan Fitzpatrick.
