42. There’s a lot of chatter about the San Francisco 49ers trading for Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins. I’ve even heard some about New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo and keeping Colin Kaepernick. But the Patriots are asking too much for Garoppolo and Cousins will get the tag.
So keeping Kaepernick with one year left on his deal looks like the only option they have. This is a win-win situation as Kaepernick gets to prove he can still play and the 49ers get a stop-gap for Mitch Trubisky. Sure, he has all the upside in the world with his arm strength, and athleticism.

But anyone that says he reads defenses well and has pocket poise needs to see the Stanford game. The good thing about that is those are two things that you can coach into a player. And new HC Kyle Shanahan is among the best at coaching his QBs up to become stars.

But 13 starts in college football isn’t enough to get you ready for the NFL no matter what. So Shanahan should give the talented Trubisky a redshirt year then turn him loose in 2018. With Shanahan, the 49ers can bet on Trubisky’s upside for the future with their No. 2 overall pick.
. QB. North Carolina. Mitch Trubisky. 2. player
