We all know that QB Tony Romo is supposed to get cut soon. But the Dallas Cowboys are to get something for him again. And this time it isn’t their idea.

When Dak Prescott balled at QB for the Dallas Cowboys, the team had a dilemma on their hands. The team had to figure out what they were going to do with former face of the franchise Tony Romo. But no one was interested in trading to valuable draft picks for him.

Why would any team do that?

Romo is now 36 and coming off back surgery so we can only imagine the plan was to cut him soon. That was until Friday, when and potential opportunity to get something for him came up. Division rival Washington Redskins are in a tough situation with Kirk Cousins.

After getting franchised last year, Cousins is not willing to sign a long-term deal to stay. So after keeping him under another tag this year, it won’t be worth it to try to tag him again next year. To make things worse, Cousins named the San Francisco 49ers as his next destination.

So no one will trade for him, knowing he won’t sign a long-term deal. But NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday that they can potentially make a deal with the 49ers and Cowboys.

In the deal, the Redskins would get Romo, the 49ers would get Cousins and the Cowboys would get draft picks. I didn’t hear Rappoport say anything about how high the picks were. But he did say the Cowboys would get a “draft haul”, which implies high picks are involved.

The potential deal is in the embryonic stages and a longshot to make it to birth. Romo playing for a division rival and the 49ers giving up high picks complicates things. Obviously, the Cowboys are going to want a lot for having to play against Romo twice a year.

But the 49ers, I don’t want to give the Cowboys a high pick for a QB they only have to wait a year for. Plus the Cowboys are just days away from releasing him for nothing. This whole idea is for the Redskins to try to save themselves after fumbling Cousins.
