The San Francisco 49ers don’t have their franchise QB or any QB just yet. But they are doing what they can to build around whoever that may be.

A few days into free agency, we still don’t know who the San Francisco 49ers will have at QB. They didn’t even have one on the roster until they signed Matt Barkley a few days ago. We all know that Barkley is not likely to be the long-term answer in San Francisco.

And it doesn’t look like there’s an answer in the 2017 NFL Draft. There was all kinds of talk about trading for Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins but that’s not viable. The Redskins aren’t interested right now unless someone wants to give up the whole farm.

The 2018 NFL Draft looks like it will have plenty of options if Cousins ends up staying with the Redskins. So they don’t know who their QB of the future is but  they are building around him now. They started early in free agency by bringing in some weapons.

More from With the First Pick

Pierre Garcon and speedster Marquise Goodwin aren’t a bad 1-2 punch for a QB to have. And they already have Carlos Hyde, who’s a solid RB when he’s healthy. All that’s left to do now is address an O-line that had only left OT Joe Staley to write home about.

Wednesday, the 49ers grabbed a center the Baltimore Ravens were ready to cut because of slary. They switched sixth-round picks with the Ravens in order to get Jeremy Zuttah. That guaranteed that the 49ers would be Zuttah’s next team while not compromising them.

The C and left OT are the most important players on the O-line so building the rest will be easier. By the time the remainder of free agency and the draft over, the O-line could be built. Whoever the QB of the 49ers future is will have a chance to play well right away.

A good offense will be built around whoever that man is!
