Utah’s Joe Williams is an explosive running back prospect who could carve out a productive career in the right system.

Joe Williams is a quick-twitch athlete who gets up to full speed in a hurry. His speed makes him a threat to score every time he touches the football. He routinely produced game-changing plays this past season at Utah.

Williams’ best trait is his speed which he uses to put pressure on the defense. His short-area burst allows him to press the line and shoot through tight running lanes. He has good vision and doesn’t hesitate to attack the open lane.

This is a runner who routinely makes the correct read and gets the most out of each carry. He also has a knack for making himself thin and picking his way through traffic. Williams isn’t a powerful, but keeps his legs churning after contact.

The majority of his carries have come out of the shotgun formation. He also benefited from the fact that Utah works to spread out the defense. This creates bigger holes and more overall running room for the back.

It would be an adjustment to ask Williams to work behind a fullback which means he might be limited to a specific scheme.

Williams isn’t a running back who’ll help in the passing game. This past year he caught only 9 passes and has only 20 receptions in his college career. The lack of experience as a pass catcher is a cause for concern and could limit his market.

He also struggles in pass protection where he tends to shy away from contact. Williams needs to show more tenacity and a willingness to meet the defender in the hole.

At this point, Williams is a situational player who could be brought in to put pressure on the defense. He needs to develop into a more versatile contributor if he wants to earn a starting role in the NFL. However, he does have the natural skills needed to be that type of pro.
