LSU’s Derrius Guice is an explosive athlete who is likely to hear his name called early in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Derrius Guice runs with a purpose and like every carry could be his last. This tenacity plays well with his quick-twitch ability and easy change of direction. He reaches the second level in a hurry and is a load to bring down.
His energy and effort are things that will be infectious boosting the entire offense’s moral.
Guice’s low pad level and balance play a major role in his success. He’s able to make his cuts without having to slow his momentum. This helps him shoot through open running lanes and pick up yards after contact.

He’s an extremely versatile runner thanks to his ability to break tackles and make defenders miss. It really is fun watching this kid fight for extra yards—not to mention breaking off long runs.
Guice is a willing pass blocker who doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice his body. However, he does need to work on setting his feet and using his hands. It’s important to note that he’s still just a redshirt Sophomore who’s still developing. His pass protection skills will improve over time.
LSU doesn’t typically get their running backs involved in the passing game. However, that could change with new offensive coordinator Matt Canada in the mix. There’s no reason for Canada to not get the ball in Guice’s hands at every opportunity.
It’s difficult to find any part of Guice’s game that’s a negative. There aren’t many running backs who feature his combination of speed, lateral quickness, balance and power. His tenacity and effort as a runner is also something you don’t see every day.
This is a back who can grind out the tough yards, attack the edge and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. It’s not a stretch to think that many NFL teams will rate Guice higher than his former teammate Leonard Fournette.
