Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell is a long and athletic edge defender who has a knack for making plays in the offensive backfield.

Clelin Ferrell features a combination of good size, bulk and long arms. This helps him fill multiple roles along the defensive front. His natural movement skills and athleticism also makes him a versatile defender.

Ferrell’s upside as a pass rusher is the most attractive part of his game. He uses his long arms to keep blockers off his frame and disengage. Ferrell features excellent snap awareness and the initial burst needed to gain the edge.

He has a few pass rush moves including a spin and power attack. His short-area quickness helps him get moving, but Ferrell doesn’t show the elite speed most evaluators look for in a pure edge rusher. This is why his versatility is key to his draft stock.

Ferrell is someone who plays the run with integrity. He has the frame to hold at the point of attack and knows how to use his hands. His strong effort helps him close the backdoor and make plays several yards down field.

Clemson has asked Ferrell to drop into coverage from time to time. In this role, he shows the balance and feel to hold up. This doesn’t mean it’s something that should be a major part of  his game, but does add to his versatility.

Overall, Ferrell is an athletic defender who can disrupt the timing of the offense. His snap awareness and length are major keys to his success. He flashes good explosiveness, but needs to prove he can routinely gain the edge.

His willingness to support the run and ability to drop in coverage make him a fit at multiple positions. However, he has the build to play defensive end in a 4-3 alignment.
