Possible Quarterback Risers: Tanner Mangum
The upcoming season is shaping up to be an interesting one for quarterbacks. Some names are set, but others have the chance to gain momentum this season.
This upcoming college football season is shaping up to be a fun one to watch. Many names are emerging to be the top signal-caller in the draft. With that said there are a few names that could make a huge jump and leap the top competition. One name to watch on that list is Tanner Magnum of BYU.
Mangum is an efficient quarterback, with decent size and a good arm. He spent his early years out of high school on a Mormon Mission to Chile, so Mangum was not able to start his college career until he was 20. Tanner will have an extra year of eligibility after this season.

However, he will be twenty-four this season and is already an older prospect at the position. With today’s NFL looking for young talent, especially at quarterback, the pressure will be on Mangum to play at a high level and come out. Mangum is dedicated to BYU, it may be hard for him to leave regardless, but if he can put together some nice numbers this year it will be hard to stay.
Mangum has limited playing time, however, in 2015 he filled in for an injured Taysom Hill, and played extremely well. Tanner led BYU to a winning season in relief of Hill. Mangum backed up Hill last season but stepped in for the Poinsettia Bowl and led BYU to a win.
Mangum has decent height and good speed. He is able to extend plays with his legs but spends a good amount of time trying to find the open receiver before running. He has a good arm and is not afraid of throwing the deep ball. One major area he will have to work on is his deep ball accuracy. Mangum is an efficient quarterback but seems to break down on deep throws.
Mangum will need to work in the pocket this season. He tends to slide out a little early to get away from defenders. Tanner will also need to work on his footwork to get ready for the NFL game. He throws with a full body motion, he will need to simplify that to get ready for the next level. His short accuracy is very good. Mangum does a good job of getting the ball in the perfect spot to allow the receivers to catch in stride. He also throws a great 10 to 15-yard pass. NFL scouts will really like that, especially of Mangum projects more as an NFL back-up.
This upcoming season will be a great opportunity for Mangum to make improvements and leap into the draftable quarterback conversation. Mangum may only be a serviceable backup at the next level but regardless it will be fun to watch him this season as “The Guy” at BYU.
