NFL Training Camps: Washington Redskins Rookie Watch
By Jon Dove
The Washington Redskins went heavy on the defensive side of the ball in the 2017 NFL Draft and added some big-time talent.
Jonathan Allen was a major steal for the Washington Redskins when he fell to them in the 1st round. He’s a high-impact player who dropped over come injury concerns. Those concerns were more about the longevity of his career and not the immediate future.
Allen is going to anchor the defensive line at one of the 5-technique spots. He’s a physical player who holds up against the run but also generates pressure on the quarterback. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s in the running for defensive rookie of the year.

Linebacker Ryan Anderson should see a lot of action on both defense and special teams. He’s an outside linebacker who can rush the quarterback, set the edge against the run and drop in coverage.
Anderson isn’t an elite athlete, but has excellent instincts and has a nose for the ball. His chances of playing may have risen with the season-ending injury to Trent Murphy.
Fabian Moreau was injured at the start of training camp but has started to see some action. He’s a bigger cornerback who has flashed elite ball skills. His ability to generate turnovers should help him see the field.
Offensively, the Redskins added the powerful Samaje Perine at running back. The thought was he would push Robert Kelley for the starting job. However, Perine’s ball security problems have lowered his expectations.
Perine is a powerful runner, but won’t get many touches if he’s a major threat to fumble the football. He also needs work as a pass protector and as a receiver.
Overall, look for the bulk of Washington’s rookie contributions to come from Allen. He has a chance to be a truly special player.
