2018 NFL Mock Draft: Opening Weekend Edition
By Jon Dove
5. San Francisco 49ers- Derwin James, S, Florida State
The San Francisco 49ers went through this entire offseason connected to Kirk Cousins. His connection with Kyle Shanahan and the fact the 49ers have money to spend makes it an obvious fit. Adding Cousins would expedite the 49ers rebuilding process.

It would also allow the 49ers to use their draft picks to address other needs. They have holes all across the roster which means they can target the best player available. At this point in the mock draft that is safety Derwin James.
This is a versatile defender who can play in the box or in deep coverage. He’s an excellent athlete who makes plays all over the field. James has also proven to be a solid leader who can take command of a defense.
Adding James to the secondary would give the 49ers a big-time playmaker on the back end. It would complement the talent they have accumulated on the defensive line.
If they are unable to work out a deal with Cousins the 49ers will be forced to target a quarterback with this pick. Josh Rosen and Mason Rudolph are available, but they could also look to trade up for Sam Darnold or Josh Allen.
