His ability to support the run depends on his quick reads and burst. He is at his best when he’s able to work through traffic, but does show some ability to take on blockers. This is an area where he could improve if he is more consistent delivering a strong jolt. However, he doesn’t feature great length which will make gaining inside hands a bit of an issue.
Scales is a solid blitzer who uses snap awareness and quickness to get after the quarterback. His ability to properly time the snap helps him attack the edge and shoot gaps. Scales is also features a non-stop motor that plays a major factor in his overall success.
He has enough athleticism and speed to also hold up in coverage. Scales keeps his head on a swivel and can read developing routes. He also doesn’t hesitate to make life miserable for pass catchers working across the middle.
Overall, Scales looks like a player who will need to begin his career on special teams. This is how he’ll stick on a roster while he learns the ins and outs of the NFL. However, he does have the athletic profile and playmaking ability to develop into a starter.
His combine numbers will be something to monitor. If he tests well evaluators will see someone with more upside than what we have already seen on tape.
