The Indianapolis Colts coaching search is turning into one of the more interesting of the offseason.

Chris Ballard cast a wide net when started the coaching search for the Indianapolis Colts. He targeted candidates from both sides of the ball obviously looking to get a feel for who was on the market.

However, some of his initial candidates appear to be accepting other jobs or canceling their interviews with the Colts. One of the more interesting candidates that was interviewed by Ballard was Baylor’s Matt Rhule.

He has recently stated he is staying at Baylor, but Rhule’s interview came as a surprise. His first season at Baylor was a rough one. However, it was sort of suspected due to the lingering sanctions from the Art Briles era.

Rhule will get more NFL looks in the future, but at this point it was a long shot for him to grab the Colts job.

Another hot candidate that has reportedly pulled his name out of the running is Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. He canceled his interview and appears to be a strong candidate to land either the New York Giants or Arizona Cardinals job.

Wilks has a strong background including working closely with Ron Rivera who has proven to be one of the better head coaches in the league.

Indianapolis was also interested in Matt Nagy who just signed on to be the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Nagy had ties with Chris Ballard from their days with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The top candidates that appear to still be on the Colts radar are Josh McDaniels, Mike Vrabel and Kris Richard. McDaniels would be an interesting fit as someone with the pedegree to get the most out of Andrew Luck.

However, the uncertainty surrounding Luck’s injured shoulder could be why the Colts job is still open.
