2018 NFL Draft: Ian Thomas Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Indiana’s Ian Thomas is a solid 2018 NFL Draft tight end prospect with the upside to be a starter in the NFL.
Ian Thomas features a solid build and overall athleticism for the tight end position. He is one of several 2018 NFL Draft tight end prospects with a chance to develop into a starter at the next level. His skill set is a little more rounded than most tight end prospects.
Thomas is able to make an impact in both the running and passing game. He is a willing blocker who works to gain inside hand placement. Thomas shows some pop to his punch as well as the leg drive needed to generate a push.
He does need to get stronger at the point of attack, but when compared to most college tight ends Thomas is an effective blocker.

In the passing game, Thomas uses his size to box out defenders and gain position. He features strong hands and is committed to plucking the ball away from his frame. His body control is something that really stands out and helps him adjust to poorly thrown passes.
Thomas isn’t a burner and won’t test as well as many of speedier tight end we have seen in recent years. However, his ability to run clean routes and find the open hole in a defense makes him an effective pass catcher.
He does a great job disguising his routes which helps him create separation at the top of his route. Thomas may not have elite speed, but does have enough to outpace a lot of linebackers and produce some big plays in the middle of the field.
Overall, this is a well rounded tight end prospect with starter upside. He has the tools needed to be an effective pass catcher as well as contribute as a blocker.
