A major domino fell in the Quarterback Carousel this week when the Washington Redskins traded for Alex Smith. This move created a major shift on how the entire quarterback market will shake out in NFL Free Agency.

Alex Smith is a solid starting quarterback who has put together a good string of winning seasons. The trade that landed him with the Washington Redskins has major implications for the Quarterback Carousel.

This year’s quarterback market and NFL Free Agency just got a lot more interesting with this move.

Adding Smith doesn’t completely take the Redskins out of the quarterback hunt. However, they are now strictly looking for a young developmental type. The type of money they are giving Smith means that he’s there starter for the next several years.

The Smith trade now means that Kirk Cousins will be with a new team next year. Projecting where he lands is tough based on the contract he is expected to receive.

There are only a few teams in the league projected to have the cap space needed to add Cousins.

However, most General Managers have perfected the craft of finding cap space when they need it most. We could see some unique trades and surprise roster cuts by a team looking to add Cousins’ services.

This article is a projection on how the quarterback market could shake out this offseason.
