South Carolina’s Hayden Hurst is one of the more athletic tight end prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Hayden Hurst is a long and athletic tight end who excels at making plays in the passing game. He is one of the more explosive tight ends in the 2018 NFL Draft, but is also one of the more raw prospects. Hurst may need some time before he is ready to be a major contributor.

The biggest thing Hurst needs to work on is his blocking. He lacks the proper technique and strength to be even average in this area. Hurst doesn’t attack the defender rather absorbing the contact. He lacks the strength to anchor and is often knocked back into the ball carrier.

His pass blocking is also an issue as he doesn’t fight for inside hands nor hold at the point of attack. It will be tough for Hurst to earn regular playing time until he improves this part of his game.

More from With the First Pick

In the passing attack, Hurst has the speed and hands to be a difference maker. He made a lot plays down the seam where he can outpace linebackers. Hurst really does a lot of his damage in the middle of the field where he doesn’t shy away from contact.

He is a naturally gifted athlete who has also shown the ability to take a handoff. This is just another example of his versatility.

However, Hurst is raw as a route runner and will need time to develop this part of his game. He also doesn’t have a ton of experience making plays in contested situations. Obviously, he has the size to make this part of his game. The question is whether or not he can be aggressive enough and routinely high point the football.

Hurst is more of a high upside prospect than a finished product. He’ll likely hear his name called on the draft’s 2nd day, but will struggle to make an impact as a rookie.
