Iowa’s Josey Jewell is a heady 2018 NFL Draft linebacker prospect who has a chance to earn a starting role in the NFL.

Josey Jewell has had a very productive college career where he often made game-changing plays. He is one of the more instinctual linebackers in the 2018 NFL Draft class. His instincts are what makes him a solid prospect.

Jewell does a great job reading post-snap information and quickly getting on the move. He rarely hesitates and is always moving towards the ball. His active approach helps him overcome some of his lack of speed.

It’s obvious that Jewell does tape work because he gets himself and his teammates in proper position before the snap. The little things like this are what helps Jewell be a consistent player.

His overall instincts and feel for the game really stand out in pass coverage. Jewell  keeps his a balanced stance while reading the quarterback.

He has a natural feel for the routes developing around him and can break on the ball.

Jewell finished his career with a total of 6 interceptions. While he is a strong coverage linebacker, he isn’t someone who can stick with quicker running backs or elite tight ends. Jewell is better suited to work out of a zone system.

Overall, this is a very solid prospect who could develop into a starter at the next level. The problem is that he doesn’t have ideal measurables. Jewell is undersized and struggles at times taking on blockers. He will need a strong defensive line in front of him to be successful.

Jewell also is only an average athlete who doesn’t feature an elite burst. This is why his instincts and ability to make quick reads are key to his success. His combine numbers will be another key factor on where he gets selected.
