2018 NFL Draft: Dalton Schultz Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Stanford’s Dalton Schultz is a well-built 2018 NFL Draft tight end prospect.
Dalton Schultz features a strong frame with solid height and bulk for the position. His size helps him as a blocker where Stanford utilized him a ton. He has potential at the next level, but is in the middle of the back as far as 2018 NFL Draft tight ends are concerned.
Schultz doesn’t jump off the screen as someone who is an explosive athlete. His movements are a little slow and plotting. This really limits the amount of separation he creates at the top of his routes.
He is routinely tightly covered and provides the quarterback with little room. Schultz also has the poor habit of catching the ball against his frame. This past season he only caught 22 passes and no more than 3 in one game.

His lack of usage obviously has hurt his development some. However, he also shows that Stanford didn’t see him as a major playmaker.
They mainly asked him to work as a blocker. He operated a lot as a lead blocker through the hole. Schultz isn’t an overly powerful player, but is committed to using his hands and proper angles. He also has the awareness to work off blocks and climb to the next level.
Schultz has experience as a pass protector where he again does a good job using his hands. He also keeps a wide base and can anchor after contact. However, his overall blocking would be more effective if he looked to deliver a powerful initial punch.
Overall, this is a solid prospect who can find a role in the league. The problem is that he doesn’t standout in any one area. This makes it hard to project him as anything more than a rotational or backup option.
